With the temperature steadily soaring higher and the little buds slowly popping out, we know for sure that spring is not far behind. (Although Auckland, you could really hurry it up!) So now, it’s almost time for you to step out of the warm comforts of your home and embrace the sunshine.

But wait—is your home spring-ready? Most portions of the home go unnoticed (read: neglected) during the harsh winters, especially the exteriors. If prepping the home for spring is on your mind, we’ve got you covered! Get started before it gets warmer!

Give your exteriors a facelift

The dire effects of winter are most evident on our home’s exterior, with the constant cold winds lashing out. Prepping for springtime calls for examining the roof maintenance for any broken shingles or tiles, solar panels,  skylights and chimney flashing. Ensure these are intact and everything is in place. While assessing the roof, clear away any debris and remove excess amounts of moss, mould and outgrowths.

Clear the gutter

Cleaning the gutter is important to prepare your home from spring-rain. Make sure the gutters are cleared of any debris and repairs are done against winter damage. Check the underground drains as well and make sure they are cleared as well, lest they cause any clotting. Leaks under the sinks, in attics and washing machine hoses can cause future problems and must be checked. And don’t forget the downspouts channel for any water issues.

Basically, get gutter guarded asap!

Inspect interior systems

Summer is fast approaching. Before the temperatures soar high, check your HVAC— heating, ventilation and air conditioning system—to see if they are in order. Hire a qualified technician and get it thoroughly checked. Service the air conditioner and make sure it is working in order and doesn’t require any replacement. Replace or clean air filters.

After all, you don’t want to get loaded with repairing hassles right when it’s super-hot!

Prep for a beautiful garden

Do you wish to open your windows to the sight of a beautiful garden this spring? If so, start early. Follow a lawn maintenance regimen before you get your hands dirty with the planting and potting. Check your garden hoses, walkways, concrete and paved areas for any damage. Pressure wash them if they’re dirty for a clean start. Rack away leaves, tree limbs, debris and thatch. Fertilise the lawn but don’t seed it yet!

Clear your window woes

Did you know that cleaning or painting windows is an effective way to get that spring shine into your home? Yes, you read it right. The windows at your home have been a shield all through the chill season, keeping cold winds at bay. It’s time to give them a quick refurb. Replace old or cracking caulk and weather stripping, if any. If everything is in order, make sure you clean them inside and out from the accumulated winter dust and grime. The results will leave you amazed!

Refresh your interiors

A dash of colour and a stroke of painting interiors goes a long way to refresh your space. Store away your dark duvets, pillowcases, covers and throws and replace them with bright pops of colour. Spring is also a good time to freshen up the fabric and give way to more breathable materials. Invest in new decorative items and your interiors will be sorted. Little changes like these, would go a long way in making your home spring-ready!
