Have you got a little one on the way, or already have a child with a blossoming imagination whose room needs an upgrade? Designing a child’s bedroom is an exciting task, but all the Insta and Pinterest inspiration out there may be a bit overwhelming! We break it down and outline the main aspects to consider when designing a kid’s room, so you can create a beautiful space that your child will love to sleep and play in!
1. Choose a theme
Picking a theme early in the design process will help you to guide the rest of your decisions, from paint colour to furnishings. There are many ways to approach a theme! You can go all out with classic options such as a jungle or fairy theme, or you can keep it simple by basing your theme around a piece of wall art or colour.
If your child has a favourite story, they may want to design the room around this and just need you to make it happen!
2. Play with colour
Weaving a consistent colour theme throughout your child’s room is the easiest way to develop a magical mood! You may want to leave the room neutral and add colour through art and furnishings, or you can go with colour on the walls.
A popular way to incorporate colour is through a feature wall or half wall as seen in the image above. This allows for a splash of brightness, without the tone becoming overbearing. You may even want to make a real focal point with a mural or patterned wallpaper design. This is sure to spark your child’s imagination and make their room into a true wonderland!
3. Design for fun
After a comfy bed, the most important part of a child’s room is an area to play in! Try to leave as much floor space as possible, so toys can be dragged out and forts can be built! You may want to build a special nook or corner in the room for reading and drawing, which can be enhanced with fun animal-shaped stools and comfy floor pillows.
Kids can accumulate a lot of stuff, so make sure there’s enough storage for toys and other items important. This means the room can be put back to looking nice and uncluttered after all the playing is done!
4. Focus on the little details
Once you have the base of the room such as wall colour and layout sorted, it’s time to collect some smaller items with big impact! Soft furnishing including pillows and rugs can bring warmth to the space and help build the theme. Think fun shapes, bright colours, and exciting textures.
Now is a good time to think about some unique decorations too. This may be a special picture on the wall, a whimsical hanging decoration, or a (non-breakable) ornament placed on the bedside table.
5. Feature magical lighting
One of the most crucial steps for creating a magical bedroom is to get the lighting just right! You can add an enchanting touch with a pendant light in the middle of the room, or choose to make the bedside light the main attraction. Having a good nightlight will provide a magical glow to read bedtime stories by, and provides comfort if your little one wakes in the night. Little Belle has a range of gorgeous kids’ nightlights which will make any fairy themed bedrooms come to life!
