Beach time by the bays is a quintessential part of the Kiwi identity anywhere you go in New Zealand! But what most people don’t know is that the Kiwi beach experience is unique. What we’re saying is you can throw your run of the mill beach bag list out the window because it just won’t do!
This one is for those who are new to the New Zealand beach scene or haven’t had the time to realise yet that summer’s come early. It’s time to bust out the beach tote and togs (and everything else we mention in this list)!
Without further ado, here’s what you’ll need to make the most out of your time on the sands and shores.
High-SPF Sunscreen
New Zealand UV rays are notorious for its devastating effects on the skin. In fact, our skin cancer rates are the highest in the world. Whether we blame that on the fact that we’ve busted our ozone layer or that we just love being under the sun, it doesn’t matter. High-SPF sunscreen of SPF+50 and broad-spectrum protection is a must—especially if you’re planning on tanning!

Beach Shelters
No, we don’t mean building a hut out of coconut husks and banana leaves (we would all fail miserably at making those, anyway).
Beach shelters are tent-like structures that provide much-needed shade when you’re laying on long stretches of tree-less sand, as well as protection from the cold breeze. Because yes, it does get windy even when the sun is glaring, it almost makes you want to put on a jumper!
Kathmandu has a great collection of quality beach tents and shelters, but you can also easily find them in your local Kmart or Warehouse.
Camp Chairs with Drink Holders
Portable (foldable) camp chairs that come with drink holders are the ultimate in beach seating luxury. Pop open a bottle of beer or enjoy a bottle of Long Whites, and you’re all set! 🍾
You can also take these anywhere you’ll need to sit, including parks and outdoor movies. Great investment! Trust us, you don’t think you need one until you try it.
Sand & Water-Proof Beach Mats
A versatile beach mat or picnic rug that’s both sand and water-proof is essential for Kiwi summers. Imagine the convenience of being able to brush off sand and pieces of grass from your mat. Easy and practical! And then imagine having to pack up a damp, sandy towel and having to throw it in the washing machine—or worse, throw it away! (Definitely hasn’t happened to me 👀)
Going to the beach? Take a sand and water-proof beach mat, mate! You won’t regret it.
Make the most of your summer holiday!
Wherever you are in New Zealand, the beach will be one of your destinations, so don’t forget to prep! You might want to consider booking accommodation early at a hotel or backpacker’s as well if you’re planning on travelling domestically.
